Titanopsis calcarea

This is a cute little succulent that looks like turtle feet growing out of the ground. It’s a small plant, reaching not much over an inch high, spreading maybe to 4 inches wide. Small yellowish flowers appear in fall/winter.

This is a cool season grower grown best in a container with well-drained cactus soil. Provide moderate moisture in the cool season when it is growing, and keep drier in summer when plants will be dormant. These plants are hardy to around 20°F. Though this is a limestone-loving species, our water is usually alkaline enough to keep plants happy.

The genus Titanopsis is derived from titanos = limestone; -opsis = resembling. This refers to how it blends into the limestone geology of the area it naturally grows in. The species, calcarea, is meant to express its growth on limestone or chalk mountains.

This species is confined to limestone outcrops in South Africa (Bushmanland, Upper Karoo).
